If Salvation comes by faith alone...
by David F. Sims
I. There is no need for repentance--continuing to live in sins ok.
a. is repentance a part of the Gospel?
b. what does the Bible say?
1. Lk. 13:3,5 (repent or perish)
2. Acts 3:19 (repent & return to have sins wiped away)
3. Acts 17:30 (God is now declaring that all men everywhere should repent)
3. Rom. 6:1-2 (Are we to continue in sin that grace might increase?)
4. Heb. 10:26-27 (go on sinning willfully...no longer remains a sacrifice
for sins)
5. 2 Pet. 3:9 (The Lord is patient...wishing for all to come to repentance)
6. Rev. 2: 5, 16; 3:19 (letters to churches of Asia ordering them to repent)
c. how do I repent? (Acts 2:37)
1. realize you are guilty & be sorry (pricked in their hearts)
2. realize need for forgiveness & seek it (What shall we do?)
3. do your best to not sin again
a. John 8:11 (go & sin no more)
b. I Pet. 2:11 (abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the
soul)
II. No need to confess--don't have to speak your faith.
a. faith is in the heart, not the tongue, right?
b. what does the Bible say?
1. Mt. 10: 32 (confess Me before Men, I'll confess you before My Father)
2. Rom. 10: 9-13 (confession results in salvation)
3. Phil. 2: 9-11 (every tongue should confess Jesus Christ is Lord)
c. how do I confess?
1. Acts 8:35-37 (the eunuch)
2. I Tim 6:12 (in the presence of witnesses)
III. No need to obey--no Lord's Supper, no giving, no good deeds, etc.
a. some believe faith is not a work, and everything else the believer does IS a work
b. what does the Bible say?
1. Mt. 7:21-27 (not everyone who says ‘Lord, Lord'...hear + obey = wise man)
2. Mt. 25:31-46 (judgement day based on works)
3. John 14:15, 21, 23-24 (Love Me = obey Me)
4. Acts 5:29-32 (Obey God rather than men)
5. Rom. 2: 5-13 (God will render to every man according to his deeds)
6. 2 Cor. 5: 10 (recompensed according to deeds)
6. Heb. 5:9 (source of salvation to those who obey Him)
7. 2 Thess. 1:7-8 (retribution to those who do not obey)
IV. No need for the church--don't have to attend, why exist?
a. what is its purpose? good works? teaching? fellowship? none of those save...so why
attend church? why does it exist?
b. church provides opportunity for saints & sinners to hear the Gospel; church IS the
body of Christ, and must be together, united to continue existing.
c. what does the Bible say?
1. Rom. 10:13-17 (hear Gospel preached to increase faith)
2. local churches existed all over the known world
3. Heb. 10:25 (don't forsake the assembly)
4. I Cor. 12: 12-31 (long discourse on characteristics of the body)
5. I Cor 16:1-3 (necessary to help needy saints)
V. No need for baptism--used only to put you in a church.
a. some say baptism is an ‘outward sign of an inward faith"; it is done only to show
others that you were already saved, done to "join" a church
b. baptism always comes before one is saved though
c. what does the Bible say?
1. Mk. 16:16 (Believe + Baptized = Saved)
2. Acts 2:38 (Repent + Baptized = Forgiven, receive Promise)
3. Acts 22:16 (Baptized = wash away sins)
4. Rom. 6: 3-5 (Baptized = buried & raised with Christ)
5. Gal. 3:27 (Baptized = clothed with Christ)
6. Eph. 5:26-27 (washed = cleansed, sanctified, purified)
7. Col. 2:11-12 (Baptized = buried in Him & raised up with Him)
8. I Pet. 3:21 (Baptism = saves you)
d. please note: WATER does not save, the blood of Christ saves; that blood is applied to
the soul when the penitent believer obeys God's command to be immersed in water
VI. No need for prayer--your faith speaks, so why pray?
a. God will take care of His own, no need to pray because He knows what you need before
you know what you need, and He'll give it to you because of your faith, without
you asking for it
b. this idea plainly ignores all the commands concerning prayer
c. what does the Bible say?
1. Mt. 7:7-11 (God gives to those who ASK Him)
2. Eph. 6: 18 (pray at all times)
3. Phil. 4: 6 (in all prayer & supplication let your requests be made known to God)
4. I Thess. 5: 17 (Pray without ceasing)
5. James 5: 14-18 (prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much; Elijah)
VII. No need to continue studying Scriptures--why bother?
a. some say you don't need to know anything except that Jesus is the Son of God-just
believe that and nothing else, and you will be saved. Therefore they could
conclude that they only really need one scripture that says Jesus is God's Son,
like John 3:16.
b. they therefore deny the need for the rest of the Bible and make the other scriptures
seem less important.
c. what does the Bible say?
1. Rom. 15: 4 (whatever was written in earlier times was written for us)
2. Rom. 10: 17 (faith comes by hearing)
3. 2 Tim. 3:16-17 (All Scripture is inspired by God, and profitable...)
4. 2 Tim. 2: 15 (Study to show thyself approved...)
VIII. No need to grow-- faith = complete maturity.
a. if one is saved by faith only, then it doesn't matter how much faith one has, as long
as it is faith that saves. therefore a babe in Christ is just as good as a
mature Christian, so why grow?
b. this assumption fails to see the need to continue fighting temptation, the need to
discern the truth, and the need for one to increase his own faith.
c. what does the Bible say?
1. I Pet. 2:1-2 (long for the pure milk of the word in order to grow)
2. Eph. 4:14-16 (grow up in all aspects unto Him)
Finally...if one is saved by faith alone, without any of the things we mentioned, then:
IX. There was no need for Christ to die on the cross!
a. some might conclude that He was God's Son BEFORE He died, so we could believe on Him
and be saved without the shedding of His blood.
b. this ignores the fact that sin demands punishment; God demands justice.
c. what does the Bible say?
1. Law of Moses demanded animal sacrifices
2. God still demands punishment for sin
3. Law of Moses was imperfect because it could not forgive sin
4. Heb. 9-10 Christ's sacrifice was the perfect sacrifice and necessary for the
covenant
If salvation is obtained by faith only, then you do not need repentance, confession, obedience,
the church, baptism, prayer, the Bible, growth, or even the sacrifice of Christ! Do you agree
with those things? Salvation by faith alone demands that we ignore 99.9% of what God has said
and just be happy believing Jesus is His Son. Are you willing to do that?
